Hiring themselves a smart agent in Picadilly,the Trio tour Britain,playing in such exalted venues as the Hackney Empire,and the Pavilion,Glasgow. Staying in an assortment of digs,Spike survives eccentric landladies,dismal decor and ghastly food.He also has his fair share of amorous adventures and unrequited lust. At last,a chance of fame,the Trio are talent-spotted and asked to appear in a Freak Show in Zurich.Fresh from success,they sign a contract to tour the 'lasagne-caked shores' of Italy.But when their Italian agent neglects to pay them, they end up joining the Italian Communist Party in order to get a free plate of pasta. Eventually returning to his bedsit in Notting Hill Gate,London,once lived in by the murderer Neville Heath,the Amy Johnson in Spike persuades him to pursue a solo career.After several troop tours of Germany,with Spike doing a one-man wild act,he turns to scriptwriting for radio.He also teams up with Harry Secombe,Michael Bentine and Peter Sellers for some ad-lib sessions at the local 'Grafton Arms'.They decide to call themselves The Goons.
